After days of non-stop rain, we craved comfort food that was easy to make and low in fat. So, we decided to prepare homemade Low Fat Sloppy Joes. Making Sloppy Joes is a breeze - just cook some meat, open a can, heat it up, and serve. However, we wanted to control the oils, salt, and seasoning in our food, which made homemade Sloppy Joes an exciting challenge. Besides, with all the time we had indoors, we were able to get really creative in the kitchen.
Comfort Food Needed today!!!
It was raining so hard this morning the dogs looked at me like, "You have to be kidding if you think we are going out in that!!!" At least we didn't have thunderstorms! Frank didn't need his Thunder Shirt, which was amazing. All of our boys are rescued, but Frank had the worst time. He was 2 when we adopted him and had been abused. He was afraid of everything and never played outside unless it was late at night when it was very quite. Frank became a super sassy boy! He was called "Frank the Boss" when he went to Puppy Daycare. Anyway, because we were soaked after taking the boys out, we decided it was time to play with making Homemade Sloppy Joes.
Low Fat Sloppy Joes
Making Homemade Sloppy Joes isn't as easy as buying a can of Sloppy Joe mix, but it is darn close. The best part is that you get to control the ingredients, and it gives you a sense of pride to make your Sloppy Joes. I mean, a few years ago, I would not have had the confidence to make homemade Sloppy Joes.
Of course, you know we wanted our Sloppy Joes spicy and a little less sweet than the usual sloppy Joes. As usual, cutting calories as much as possible is extremely important to us. The recipe does not take much time to prepare, and the only additional time required is to chop the onion and green pepper. Oh, and you have to open the Tomato sauce and paste cans!!!. I Love this recipe and we are able to have Sloppy Joes for dinner and then for lunch a couple of days. It's even better the next day!!!
What to serve with Sloppy Joes
For dinner, we had homemade French Fries and broccoli. The fries turned out crunchy, salty, and so easy to make. We only needed a baking potato, olive oil, salt, and pepper. We started making the fries before the Sloppy Joes, and both finished cooking at the same time. To make the French fries, we sliced the potato into strips and tossed them in a tablespoon of olive oil. We added some salt and black pepper for seasoning. We then placed the potato strips in a preheated 400-degree oven and baked them for about 30 minutes until they reached our desired level of crunchiness.

Making the Perfect Homemade Low Fat Sloppy Joes
A Few Things We Use
Ingredients
- 1 Tablespoon Olive Oil
- 1 Medium Onion
- 1 Green Pepper
- 1 Habanero Optional- Only add if you want it Spicy!
- 2 Cloves Garlic
- 1 Tablespoon Tomato Paste
- 1 Pound 99% ground turkey Or Ground Chicken Breast
- 1 Tablespoon Worcestershire Sauce
- 1 Can Tomato Sauce 15 oz can
- ¼ Cup Sugar-free Ketchup
- 2 Tablespoon Apple Cider Vinegar
- 1 teaspoon Salt
- ½ Tablespoon Dry Mustard
- 1 Tablespoons Brown Sugar Optional- Only add if you want it sweeter
Instructions
- To prepare the ingredients for your recipe, start by chopping a green pepper into small chunks. Then, chop an onion to about the same size as the green pepper, and mince some garlic. If you want to add some spice to your dish, you can also chop a habanero pepper. However, be careful with the habanero as it can be very spicy - you may want to use only half of it depending on your preference.
- Heat Olive Oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add Bell pepper, Onion, Garlic, Habanero (if using), and salt. Cook for a couple of minutes until the pepper and onions are tender.
- Add Ground Turkey. Cook over medium heat until turkey is done - about 5 or 6 minutes. Because there isn't a lot of oil, the turkey may stick to the pan, you can add a ¼ cup of water to stop sticking.
- When the turkey is done, Combine tomato sauce, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, ketchup, apple cider vinegar, dry mustard, and ¼ cup of water. If you want to add some sweetness, add 1 Tablespoon Brown Sugar. Stir this sauce into turkey mixture to combine.
- Bring to a boil. Then simmer for 15 to 20 minutes until mixture has thickened.
- While the Sloppy Joe's are simmering pour a glass of wine and relax! Serve Sloppy Joes on a Hamburger Bun and with homemade french fries and steamed broccoli
