****Update: Since this blog post was written, we have moved and settled into our home in North East Ohio. We are still making homemade beef broth when we can. 😀****
The plan is to move before the end of May since we started all these seeds last week. No move is complete without a total freezer clean-out. What to make first- homemade Beef Broth.
This should be a fun few months!
We decided we needed to get everything organized for our move. We really need to clean the garage, but it has been so cold and rainy. It's going to be a few more weeks for the garage "adventure." Another thing that must be taken care of is all the stuff in our freezer. I mean, the frozen vodka and gin isn't a problem to move, and it won't go to waste if it heats back up like that would happen.
Finding "treasures" in the freezer
Why do we have so much stuff in the freezer?!?!? We make the dogs homemade food, so we have a good amount of chicken thighs in the freezer at all times. I found several things I had to toss out just because they got freezer burned. . bummer. The big bag of cauliflower rice that got lost and then the turkey cheese enchiladas from November 2016. . .So Sad.
Homemade Beef Broth
When we make steak, we save the bones to make beef broth. (It's so simple; just put them in a freezer bag for a later date). We found a bag of about 8 big steak bones. Oh boy!! We had to make beef broth. Just put the bones in a big stock pot, add some onions, bring to a boil, and simmer for 4 hours. It will be the best broth; it's easy and doesn't cost anything!
I did make a mistake and gave the dogs each a steak bone after we finished making the broth. The boys loved them!!! Roscoe went through his "yelling at everyone" as he ate his bone. He is so funny. He loves to bark at Elvis. The worst part was they woke me up at 2:45 a.m. to go outside. Poor guys, they had tummy aches. I thought the bones were a good treat. . .I was wrong. NEVER AGAIN! I hate it when they get sick.
Next big decision . . .what to make with homemade beef broth
We know beef is not usually eaten on a diet. It's harder to cut calories when cooking with beef. So we figured, let's come up with something fun! Since it's still so cold outside, we figured, "Why not experiment with making French Onion Soup AND Beef Vegetable Soup?". We still had a few cups of broth, so we made a Beef Stroganoff. We cut a lot of calories out of all these recipes. They still had a ton of flavor, and I would bet are just as good as the original recipes.
The next few months are going to be fun! We will keep you updated on our adventures. Especially when we break into the organization of the garage, it should be SUPER fun!
