We absolutely love pizza! It's always a great experience to order a pizza delivery, and the most difficult part is just answering the door when it arrives. But if you're looking for a fun-filled night with lots of laughs, and want to create something that is both satisfying and flavorful, we recommend grilling a pizza!
When I first heard about grilling pizza, I was intimidated and thought that it sounded strange. But I was so wrong. Grilled pizza is amazing and incredibly delicious. I don't usually like admitting when I'm wrong, but in this case, I'm happy to say that I was mistaken.
Grilled Pizza!!!!!
Using a regular grill
Grilling pizza on a regular charcoal grill instead of a fancy outside clay pizza oven might seem impossible, but it's actually a fun and easy way to cook up some delicious pizza. Although having an outside clay pizza oven or an OONI Pizza oven would be a dream come true, we'll have to stick with our charcoal grill for now until we can get our hands on an OONI pizza oven.
The first time we attempted to grill pizza on the grill, we placed it directly over the hot coals, which resulted in a crust that was slightly burned. Despite this, it was still delicious! The next time we tried it, we moved the coals to the sides of the grill, creating a more even heat distribution. This time, the crust was cooked perfectly, with some "dark" places that added an extra layer of flavor.
The beauty of grilling pizza on a charcoal grill is that you can customize it to your liking. Whether you prefer a crispy crust or a softer one, you can adjust the heat and placement of the coals to achieve your desired result. And if the crust does get a little too dark in some spots, don't worry - it'll still taste amazing!
Tips for making a GREAT Grilled Pizza!
- To save time and make the process smoother, chop and prepare all the toppings in advance. This way, you can focus on grilling the pizza instead of rushing to prepare the toppings.
- If using a charcoal grill, place the coals on one of the sides of the grill to create indirect heat. This will cook the pizza evenly with less chance of burning it.
- Roll out the pizza dough to the desired size. Don't worry about making it perfectly round or square; it's okay if the crust is oddly shaped.
- To make the process even simpler, you can place the dough on parchment paper. This way, you won't have to worry about the dough sticking to the grill. You can also purchase pre-made dough that comes with parchment paper.
- Before placing the dough on the grill, oil the grill grates with a paper towel soaked in olive oil. This will prevent the dough from sticking to the grill and add a lovely flavor to the crust.
- Once the dough is on the grill, cook it until it comes up easily from the grates. Don't be tempted to flip it too soon. Wait for the dough to cook through before flipping it.
- As soon as you flip the dough for the grilled pizza, add all the toppings. Don't be afraid to experiment with different flavors and combinations.
Cook the dough for a few minutes until it reaches the desired crispiness. We opted for a thin crust and let it cook until it was crispy and delicious. My mouth is currently watering as I relive the amazing taste.
How we made this Grilled Pizza:
Shrimp - ¾ pound. Remove shells and Marinade for no more than 15 minutes. We put the Shrimp in the marinade when we started the grill. Shrimp Marinade - ½ Tablespoon Roasted Garlic, 2 tablespoons lemon Juice, and ¼ cup white wine
Asparagus - 1 bunch of Asparagus. Snap the ends off and spray lightly with olive oil
Mushrooms - 8 Ounces Mushrooms - Sauté Mushrooms in 1 Tablespoon Olive Oil, ½ Tablespoon Roasted Garlic. When they are cooked, add a pinch of salt and ¼ Cup of white wine. Cook down the wine, and you will have the best mushrooms.
Garlic sauce - 2 Tablespoons olive oil and 1 Tablespoon Roasted Garlic (add a couple of chopped grilled Habaneros if you want it spicy!)
Spread the Garlic olive oil sauce onto the pizza and then add Shrimp, Asparagus, and Mushrooms. We added 2 ounces of Goat Cheese and about an ounce of Parmesan cheese. Cover the grill and cook until the cheese melts and the crust is the crispness you want. We cooked ours until it was nice and crispy. This was one of the best pizzas we have ever had.
Salt Block
We cooked the Shrimp and Asparagus on a salt block is awesome to use on a grilled pizza. Ok, the Himalayan salt block is the coolest thing ever. It adds a nice soft salt flavor to the Shrimp and Asparagus. If you don't use a salt block, add a teaspoon of salt to the Shrimp marinade and sprinkle some salt onto the Asparagus before you place them on the grill.
This pizza sounds difficult, but it is so easy and actually is a lot of fun to make.
