Who doesn’t adore a warm, freshly baked bagel? That’s one of the many reasons we’re head over heels for our new high-protein bagel recipe! Not only are they incredibly easy to whip up, but they’re also quick enough to make every morning. Imagine skipping the coffee shop lines and enjoying a delicious homemade bagel that costs a fraction of what you'd pay at the local bagel shop. Plus, you’ll have full control over the ingredients, ensuring each bite is just how you like it! Also, these bagels have that wonderful fresh taste right at home in no time at all.

Bagels, onions, salmon, eggs spices, and cream cheese

Bagels are perfect for any meal of the day! I know it sounds a bit bold, but I can’t help it—I’m obsessed! Starting the morning with a delicious everything bagel loaded with egg, sausage, and ooey-gooey cheese is the best. Then, for lunch, a mouthwatering cold cut bagel sandwich! And let’s not forget dinner: whether it’s a creative bagel sandwich or crunchy bagel croutons sprinkled over a fresh salad, the possibilities are endless. Bagels truly elevate every meal into a delightful feast!

How to make these High-Protein Bagels

This recipe may sound a bit unconventional because one of the main ingredients is cottage cheese. Yes, cottage cheese! Also, you can make these fresh bagels in less than 30 minutes. I enjoy customizing the toppings based on my mood—whether it's everything seasoning, sesame seed, parmesan cheese, garlic, onion, salt, or whatever brings me joy that day!

Ingredients for Bagels (cottage cheese, salt, garlic, flour, cheese, sesame seeds.

I like to gather all the ingredients first because it helps reduce stress and makes the cooking process go more smoothly. Ingredients needed for these high-protein bagels are: 1 Cup self-rising flour, 1 Cup cottage cheese, ¼ teaspoon salt, ¼ teaspoon garlic powder. Don't forget your favorite toppings like everything seasoning, sesame seeds, parmesan cheese, etc.

Before you start mixing everything, fill a 1 to 2-quart saucepan with water and bring it to a boil. As Benjamin Franklin said, a watched pot of water never boils. So now, it's the perfect time to begin mixing the bagel ingredients! (and yes, I just quoted Benjamin Franklin while talking about bagels!)

In a small food processor, mix together cottage cheese, flour, salt, and garlic powder. I like to blend the cottage cheese for about 30 seconds until it is smooth, then add the flour, salt, and garlic powder and blend again until it forms a dough, about 2 minutes.

Just a quick note: the one kitchen tool I can’t live without is my small Kitchen Aid food processor. If you don’t have one, you should think about getting one, or let your friends and family know you’d love one for your birthday or Christmas! Honestly, the only things I use more often are my pans, oh and maybe our wine glasses!!!

If you grab one through our Amazon store link, we earn a small commission that helps keep our blog going. It won’t cost you anything extra, but it really does help us out—thanks so much!

The dough can be quite sticky, but don't worry! Just sprinkle some flour on your cutting board, kitchen counter, or a plate. Roll the dough around in the flour until it forms a nice dough ball. Then, divide it into 4 equal parts. Don’t forget to make a hole in each bagel!

TIP: I love using a plate for this part because it makes cleanup super easy. Simply brush off the extra flour into the trash and pop the plate in the dishwasher.

Forming Bagles

Pop the newly formed bagels into the boiling water for 30 seconds per side. Then top them with your favorite bagel toppings and spray them with cooking spray to help brown them in the air fryer.

Place them on parchment paper in the air fryer and air fry for 10 minutes at 380 degrees. Flip them and air fry for an additional 5 minutes or until golden brown.
