I can't get enough of a mouth-watering Hot Italian Sausage Sandwich with peppers and onions. It's hands down my absolute favorite sandwich ever! Plus, it always brings back such sweet memories of the times I spent with my Dad when I was growing up. Recently, we had a blast at the Great Geauga County Fair, and one of the highlights for me was getting to savor one of these scrumptious sandwiches. The best part was it tasted exactly like it did when I was a teenager. It's funny how food can transport you back to happy moments and memories, isn't it?
How to Make a Hot Italian Sausage Sandwich
Amy and I would like to share a recipe for a delicious fair sandwich that would be a great addition to any cookbook. This sandwich holds a special memory for us as I always made Amy get one whenever we went to the fair. I have been making it at home since she was just a little girl.
To start, ensure that you have a good quality Italian sausage. We typically opt for Hot Italian sausage links, but Mild Italian Sausage would be just as good. Alternatively, you can use a bratwurst with onions and peppers, which is also one of our favorites.
Cooking the Sausage
Heat a Tablespoon of olive oil in a large pan over medium heat. After about 30 seconds, add the Italian sausage links to the pan. Brown the sausage on all sides, this takes about 5 to 10 minutes.
While the Italian Sausage is cooking slice the onion, red, and green bell peppers.
If you want it really spicy, chop a habanero as we did, or add a few flakes of crushed red peppers. This is the best part of this Hot Italian Sausage Sandwich you can make it really spicy, a little spicy, or no spice at all. Now, I personally believe it has to have some kick just to make it that great zippy flavor in every bite. Don't worry, and if you're not into the heat, the sandwich is still perfect if it's mild. Just do whatever makes you happy!!!
Now, once the Hot Italian Sausage is done. Remove it from the pan and set aside while the onions and peppers cook. I like to take the temperature of the sausage just to make sure it's done all the way in the middle. Just take a thermometer in one end of the sausage and check the temp.
After removing the sausage, add a Tablespoon of oil to the pan. Then add the sliced onions and peppers. Toss them around to mix and cook for 5 minutes or so until they start to soften.
Once the peppers start to cook, add the sausage back in and add a cup of water. Cook over medium heat for 20 minutes or so until the peppers and onions have the consistency you want. The onions and peppers should be soft and really flavorful. BTW - When making this Hot Italian Sausage Sandwich, the house smells amazing when this is cooking.
This Hot Italian Sausage can be served on a bun or plain with just the sausage and peppers (no bun).
