This Spicy Nasi Goreng recipe (Indonesian Spicy Fried Rice) will give you a "Kick in the Whiskers!"
If you're a fan of spicy cuisine, then Nasi Goreng - Indonesian Spicy Fried Rice is definitely a dish that you should try! Our belief is that everything tastes better with a little bit of heat. We take pride in using actual seasonings instead of solely relying on hot sauce to flavor our dishes. What's even more exciting is experimenting with various spices and coming up with a recipe that doesn't seem too spicy at first, but then surprises you with a burst of flavor. That's precisely what we've accomplished with this recipe, which initially called for only ½ teaspoon of crushed red chili peppers and 2 teaspoons of cayenne pepper or less. We've enhanced it to give it that extra “kick in the whiskers" that we all love!
And the best part of this recipe is that it takes less than 30 minutes to prepare, making it an excellent way to use up leftover rice!!!!
Sooooooo Spicy!!!
This Indonesian Spicy Fried Rice is amazing with an intense level of spiciness. Despite the heat, we couldn't resist the mouthwatering flavor. The Serrano Peppers on top were spicy and they were more of a garnish (haha) and didn't compare to the nice and spicy Nasi Goreng. To tone down the heat, we added green onions to the dish and continued savoring every bite. Haha
Love spice - sometimes maybe too much!!!
We love to take Habanero, Thai, and other hot peppers and dry them so we have them in the winter. I'm trying to figure out a way to dry them on the grill. Right now, we do them in the oven and the pepper aroma can be so strong that it makes us cough. What's really cool is to dry Habanero peppers on a baking dish and then make a pizza. Don't wash the pan just put some oil on before the pizza dough. The crust is so spicy it will "bring tears to your eyes"!!! In a good way, of course! We love to make our Pesto pizza after drying peppers. It's so hard to describe how good the crust is and then add spicy pesto with chicken. It will make any "pepper head" freak out with joy.
During the winter, we like to preserve Habanero, Thai, and other hot peppers by drying them. Currently, we dry them in the oven, but the strong pepper aroma can cause coughing. We are looking for a way to dry them on the grill instead. We have discovered that drying Habanero peppers on a baking dish and using it to make a pizza is a fantastic idea. Simply add oil to the pan before placing the pizza dough in it and the crust will be spicy enough to "bring tears to your eyes" in a good way. Our favorite pizza to make after drying peppers is Pesto pizza with chicken. It's difficult to describe how amazing the crust tastes, especially when combined with spicy pesto. Any "pepper head" freak out over this dish.
Hot hands!!!!
When Amy was in 7th grade, I decided it was time for the children to clean their own bathrooms. However, Amy was hesitant to touch the cleaning products, so I suggested she use the yellow kitchen gloves. She took them and went off to complete her new task. After about 10 minutes, she came downstairs screaming with bright red hands. She kept saying that her hands felt like they were on fire. It turns out that I had used those yellow gloves when I chopped Habanero peppers for drying. When she put her hands in water, the capsaicin oils from the peppers went to work! This incident taught us a valuable lesson, and she hasn't cleaned a bathroom since then! hahaha! Just kidding. But it was a major lesson for us!!!
Don't you hate when people ask you, "how can you eat that"?
Whenever someone questions our food choices with a "How can you eat that?", I can't help but wonder "How can you not?". They're missing out on so much deliciousness in life! For me, nothing beats the combination of spiciness and flavor in a dish. Our top picks are always those that pack a good punch of both. This recipe is particularly special to me because you can adjust the level of spice to your liking and still enjoy the delicious flavors of the shrimp and pork.
Nasi Goreng (Indonesian Spicy Fried Rice)
We made some adjustments to the original recipe to cut some calories. Instead of using ¼ cup of Peanut Oil, we reduced it to 2 tablespoons and opted for Olive Oil. We eliminated the 2 tablespoons of butter as it wasn't necessary and also reduced the amount of brown sugar used. To add more spice, we included additional Cayenne pepper and Crushed red chili peppers
We used leftover Pork.
The other night we grilled a Pork Tenderloin and kept the leftovers to prepare Nasi Goreng. We simply added some Goya Cumin Seasoning to the Tenderloin before grilling it.
A simple method to prepare pork is by utilizing boneless pork chops or tenderloin. For seasoning, one may opt for Goya Seasoning or simply salt and pepper. Heat up a tablespoon of olive oil in a pan and sear the pork on all sides. Then bake in a preheated oven at 375 degrees for approximately 15 minutes. It's important to ensure that the pork has reached a temperature of at least 145 degrees.
Here is another way to cook pork: Roasted Pork Tenderloin. It's very simple- just cook it with salt and pepper. We usually freeze a couple of cups of the Pork Tenderloin so, when we're ready to make the Nasi Goreng (Indonesian Spicy Fried Rice), we just have to defrost the pork and start cooking.
So simple to make Nasi Goreng (Indonesian Spicy Fried Rice)
Nasi Goreng made with Cauliflower Rice.
This Indonesian Spicy Fried Rice recipe is a quick and easy dish once all the ingredients are chopped. It only takes 10 minutes to cook and is perfect for using up leftovers. In our case, we used leftover rice and pork. To make it healthier, you can substitute cauliflower rice for a low-calorie option. We tried it before and it was amazing. However, today we opted for real rice since we didn't have any cauliflower at home and it was raining.
Begin by sautéing the onions and spices. Then, add in either Rice or Cauliflower rice, cooked Pork, Soy Sauce, and Brown Sugar. Make sure to coat the rice with all the spices, and if any spices stick to the bottom of the pan, add a ¼ to ½ cup of water. Once that is complete, add in the Shrimp and cook until they turn pink. Finally, mix in the eggs and toss to coat the rice and cook the eggs. For garnish, top with green onions and either Serrano Peppers or Fresno Peppers (optional for extra spice)

- To cut down on calories, measure the amount of oil used in the recipe.
- For those following a Weight Watchers plan, substituting cooked pork with cooked chicken will result in zero points.
- To significantly reduce the points in the recipe without sacrificing flavor, try substituting rice with cauliflower. This alternative is delicious and very satisfying.
