Have you ever tried an old-fashioned pot roast recipe for Sunday dinner? It's absolutely divine! Not only is it a warm and comforting meal, but it also brings back nostalgic childhood memories for me. During the winter months, our Sunday dinners were either pot roast or roasted chicken, which always gave our home a wonderful aroma that made us all hungry and excited to eat. Our dinner was served at noon sharp and supper at five sharp. Growing up on a dairy farm, meals were based on chores, and my dad was like a human clock, always ensuring that we had our meals at the same time every day.
When my mom made her old-fashioned pot roast, she usually added potatoes to it. For dinner, we would always have mashed potatoes, homemade biscuits, and a pie or cobbler for dessert. For supper, we would have leftover meat with fried potato cakes. It's the perfect way to enjoy a hearty Sunday meal!
This old-fashioned pot roast recipe is simply delicious and melts in your mouth. You can make it in the oven or a slow cooker, and it always turns out perfect. It's an easy recipe that you'll love!
Easy Steps for Making this Old Fashion Pot Roast Recipe
If you're looking to make a delicious meal, I've got a great tip for you. First, let's talk about the meat. I suggest getting an inexpensive cut like Chuck Roast because it has amazing flavor. When you're picking out your meat, make sure to look for fat marbling - that's the little bit of fat that's within the muscle of the red meat. Just try to avoid cuts with huge pieces of fat in the middle. But don't worry if you accidentally get one with a lot of fat; you can trim off some of it before cooking. But don't go overboard and remove all the fat, because it adds a lot of flavor. I hope that helps!
I removed some of the fat from the roast, but there is still a fair amount left.
Season the Pot Roast
We keep the seasoning for our beef dish simple but bold. Adding beef bouillon enhances the meat's flavor. I find it amusing when people on TV or Instagram sprinkle spices one by one on the meat. While it may be for show, I prefer mixing the spices together to avoid having one area of the meat too salty or too peppery, or even with no seasoning at all. So, my tip is to put the spices in a small bowl and mix them together. It only takes a few seconds, but the meat is fully coated with the seasoning."
Once you have combined the spices, sprinkle the mixture generously over the meat, making sure to cover it evenly. Next, use your hands to gently massage the seasoning into the meat, allowing the flavors to fully penetrate and infuse the meat.
Chop the potatoes, carrots, and onions into large chunks. Toss them with the seasoned roast in the casserole dish.
Add two cups of either water or beef broth to enhance its flavor. Then, cover the dish with foil to ensure that the heat is evenly distributed and the contents are cooked to perfection. Preheat your oven to 375 degrees and bake for 3 to 3 ½ hours. This will allow all the flavors to meld together and create a mouth-watering dish.
Serve and Enjoy!!!!
