There's nothing better than a Philly Cheesesteak sandwich, except maybe a homemade Philly Cheesesteak calzone! We used the Air Fryer to create a new and delicious way to enjoy this classic dish!
I absolutely loved every bite of this delicious meal! I don't feel guilty at all for indulging in the cheesy goodness of the Philly Cheesesteak calzones. I'm already thinking about pairing them with some Baked French Fries next time - doesn't that sound like a yummy idea? I can't wait to have this again!
TIPS:
- Use Cooking Spray like olive oil or butter spray to spray on the Philly Cheesesteak Calzones and the air fryer basket.
- Whipped Cream Cheese helps to stretch the Cheese
- Use Sharp White Cheddar Cheese to cut the sweetness of the sautéed onions and peppers. Or use your favorite cheese.
- Buy cheese and shred yourself. The Cheese will be fresher and have a better flavor
- Measure everything!
- Use premade bread dough, pie dough or pizza dough
How to make the Philly Cheesesteak Calzone
Preparing the Philly cheesesteak calzone can take a few minutes to prepare, particularly when it comes to grilling the onions and peppers. After allowing them to cook down to perfection, remove them from the pan. Season the steak and cook in the same pan as the onions. Once everything is cooked to your liking, slice the cooked steak into thin strips. Mix together the steak, onions and peppers, cheddar cheese, and cream cheese to create a rich and creamy filling that will tantalize your taste buds.
To prepare delicious Philly Cheesesteak calzones, start by spreading the bread dough evenly. Next, generously add your desired filling, making sure to leave enough space around the edges. Crimp the edges tightly to seal in the filling and prevent any spillage. Give the calzones a quick spray of cooking oil to ensure a crispy texture, then air fry them at 375°F for approximately 10 minutes. Check if they are golden brown. Flip them over, spray the bottoms with cooking oil, and air fry for 2 additional minutes. This will result in perfectly cooked calzones that are crispy on the outside and filled with warm, gooey goodness on the inside. Enjoy!
It's important to note that air fryers may cook the Philly Cheesesteak calzones differently, so be sure to check on them after 10 minutes to ensure they reach the desired golden brown color.
Philly Cheesesteak History
According to Philadelphia's official tourism site, "Pat Olivieri invented the Cheesesteak in the 1930s. Olivieri was a hot dog vendor in south Philadelphia who, as the story goes, decided to grill some beef from the butcher and put it on an Italian roll. A cab driver caught a whiff and asked for a steak sandwich".
