What do you do when you get some amazing Pumpkin Spice Sausage??? Make a Stuffed BREAD!
We love to experiment at home coming up with new recipes. It's so much fun to try our favorite takeout foods and re-imagine them into new recipes with the flavors we like, cutting out some calories AND, most importantly, not leaving the house! Now, a stuffed bread is not going to be low in calories but when you're hungry for this it's better to make one at home, and control some of the calories than buy one when you're at the mall.
If you're like me it seems like whenever we go on a trip I end up stopping and getting a Stromboli or Calzone. Then comes the regret... I feel bad because I'm so full and want to take a nap or it just didn't taste as good as it looked at the fast food stand. So making this stuffed bread at home satisfies my want for a Calzone without all the "Self-drama" that I put myself through!
No, Take Out Take Out!!!
This is one of our no take out - take out recipes. So what is stuffed bread? In my mind, it's anything you want to put inside of bread dough and bake! We had this pumpkin-spiced sausage and really didn't know what to make. We cooked one of the sausages and both of us decided it needed to be made with bread. So we started our brainstorming. Yes, this brainstorming involved a glass of wine! Haha
I find it fun when tasting something, like this pumpkin spiced sausage, and it immediately reminds me of fall. Food is so interesting how it can remind the taste buds of a season or memory. For me, pancakes always remind of fall and winter. When I was a kid there were a lot of times we had pancakes for dinner. That was always fun for me. I guess my Mom was ahead of her time since Breakfast for dinner is popular now.
Stuffed Bread
Back to the bread. After tasting the sausage we knew that Gouda cheese would match the flavor of the pumpkin seasoning in the sausage. And goat cheese would add creaminess and even more flavor to the mixture. The rest of the ingredients were there to enhance the sausage and cheese.
This takes about 10 minutes to put together and 20 minutes to cook. And was one of the best stuffed breads I've ever had. Yes, we made it twice to make sure the flavors were as good as the second time!!! A calzone has approximately 1280 calories!!! This recipe has 325 calories per serving and it is very satisfying.
